Gracie - Back on her feet

Updated: Oct 17

Gracie came off a farm with thousands of other female chickens her age. They had been bred and used for egg production in a "free-range" system. A large animal sanctuary accepted the girls off the farm at the end of their "useful life", to save them from slaughter.

When she arrived at the sanctuary, the team quickly spotted that Gracie was completely unable to stand. They contacted us to see if we would be able to provide her with support. She came here, with a friend so that she was not alone for her quarantine and recovery period.

Gracie was immediately seen by Chicken Clinic, who identified bruising and suspected she had suffered a break from being picked up by the legs. The prognosis for healing without surgery was quite poor, but we decided to give Gracie a chance.

Her leg was strapped to her body to allow it to heal and she was put on bed rest. She quite quickly began showing us her cheeky and inquisitive side! After weeks of bed rest, she was able to bare weight on her bad leg and so we began to increase her space. Eventually, when she was well enough, Popcorn and Gracie integrated into our main flock.

Gracie still has a minor limp but is the cheekiest, bravest girl in the flock. Thanks to her determination and the quick intervention she is now living a full and happy life!!
