Lyra joined us in November 2025. She was the last hen left in her flock and was missing her top beak after a previous injury, making her a bit vulnerable. At 7 years old, her humans wanted her to have a nice permanent onward home. So, we agreed she could come to live here in our permanent flock.
She had to be quarantined off site as the Avian Influenza risk was very high at the time.
When she joined us, we quickly discovered that she ate by licking up her food! So all the main feeders in the run were switched back to crumb for her as its much easier for her to lick up than pellet! Due to her beak shape, she needs help grooming when she has new feathers coming through (to remove the sheaths). She also needs her bottom beak filed every so often. Other than that, she lives a totally normal life!
