Magic Mumma

Magic and her 7 chicks came to us after they were accidently hatched into a flock where they were unsafe and getting attacked.

Here, Magic was able to raise her babies in safety. She was treated for leg mites and lice and she and her chicks were regularly health checked and monitored. She was an incredible mum and her chicks slept under her for almost 3 months... no idea how they all fit!!

Magic seemed to thrive off being a mumma and looked out for them, putting their needs first for almost 3 months. When she started to distance herself from them, we were able to intervene.

One of the chicks is a little underdeveloped, potentially from her parents being related. But she is sweet and gentle and has made a great flockmate for disbled silkie cross Juanita.

Four of the chicks had to be rehomed, as we sadly don't have space to keep them here and couldn't find a suitable home for the whole family.

We have one boy, Harry, who has showed us just how hard it is to rehome cockerels!! Harry remains very closely bonded with his mother.

It was lovely to see first hand the bond between mother and babies. Magic and the chicks would get very distressed when separated from her babies for treatments. Our thoughts go out to chicks who have to grow up without mothers and mothers who are separated from their babies.
